Wenn eine Trakehner-Stute ein Fohlen bekommen soll, dürfen nur Trakehner, Englisches oder Arabisches Vollblut eingekreuzt werden. Auf diese Weise sollen der edle Körperbau und der temperamentvolle Charakter der Pferderasse erhalten bleiben. Ursprünglich stammen die Tiere aus dem Ostpreußischen Ort Trakehnen, der in der Nähe von Kaliningrad in Russland liegt.
