Der Holsteiner ist ein außerordentlich beliebtes Sportpferd und zählt zu den ältesten Pferderassen Deutschlands. Er wird seit dem 14. Jahrhundert im Kloster von Uetersen gezüchtet, das im heutigen Bundesland Schleswig-Holstein liegt. Die ersten Aufzeichnungen über den Holsteiner sind aber noch wesentlich älter und stammen aus dem Jahr 1225.
